HODs Message

I cordially extend best wishes to the aspiring young students who are pursuing and also who are going to pursue Honours and Generic courses in history under this department. With the expansion of the disciplinary boundaries in Social Sciences and Humanities, the discipline of history reasserted its relevance in unfolding unexplored realities of humankind with methodological advances that the genre has been witnessing from last three to four decades. The retrospective analysis of human’s past will enable students to understand both grounded and structured realities of human society, economy and politics. History is, as EH Carr suggests, a subject of unending dialogue between past and present investigates past of humankind critically to understand the present. Within the socio-economic and political context of India and its Northeastern Assam, objective and critical study of the past becomes even more essential to address the core issues of politics, society, culture, economy and so on. The history syllabus for the undergraduates of the Dibrugarh University, which the Department of History, Digboi Mahila Mahavidyalaya follows, therefore addresses the history of politics, society, culture, gender, economy and environment of India in general and Assam in particular. The introduction of CBCS curriculum further opened wide spectrum of the discipline to the students by introducing themes of world history, western history, national history, regional history and Historiography etc.to generative universal perspectives among students. The Department of History is committed to the cause of academic well being of its students and giving utmost importance and priority in handling their academic activities. The department is also talking initiatives towards digital mode of teaching with the active engagement of its young faculty members as well as inculcating ways of participatory learning.
