The Department of Economics is one of the oldest departments of Digboi Mahila Mahavidyalaya. It came into existence in 1981since the inception of the college. While General courses started from the beginning of the college, Major courses started in the year 1988 and since then it has been able to produce many successful students every year. The fundamental objective of Economics program is to teach students a method of reasoning and to demonstrate its application in the various economic fields. From 2019 onwards the department has adopted Choice Based Credit System as per the curriculum of the parent university. Now the department offers both Honors and Generic courses under three years degree courses for BA in Economics. The department follows the syllabus of Dibrugarh University under which it offers different courses in Economics like Micro Economics, Macro Economics, Public Finance, Development Economics, International Economics, Statistics for Economics, Mathematics for Economics, Econometrics, Indian Economy etc. The department has well experienced and dedicated faculties. The department has a number of valuable books in the central library as well as in the departmental library. The students are encouraged to actively participate in the classroom and to present their views. They are also encouraged to actively participate in all the activities of the college, attend talks and lectures delivered by reputed learned speakers in the college as well as in other institutions. To have some practical knowledge, students are encouraged to conduct field studies under the guidance of the teachers of the department. The Department publishes “Bulletin Board” and a hand written magazine “Economic Horizon” and a wall magazine “PRAGYA” every year. The department has a plan to introduce add on courses (already approved by Dibrugarh University) on “Rural Development”,” Entrepreneurship Development”, and “Organic Firming” in near future.

Economics is one of the most challenging subjects in the present world. This is one of the top most important considerations, which dictate the policy matters of a nation. In the present day context, it is essential to have at least a working knowledge of Economics irrespective of the discipline that anyone pursues. As such, it is highly in demand for the students undergoing the UG course in Humanities. Horizon of the subject is ever expanding with the inclusion of the new field of study like Environmental Economics, Health Economics etc. It need not be overemphasized that there is ample scope of employment for candidates who excel in Economics. The department is fully aware of the expectations and deliverables. The department takes utmost care for overall development of the student. The students are encouraged to get involved in all the activities of the college and are motivated to participate in various competitions be it sports, cultural program, debate, etc. To have some practical knowledge, students are also encouraged to conduct field studies under the guidance of the teachers of the department.
